City Montessori School: World’s Largest School by Enrolment
City Montessori School (CMS) in Lucknow, India, holds the Guinness World Record as the world’s largest school by pupil numbers in a single city. As of August 2023, enrolment stood at 61,345 students across its campuses. This achievement, first recognised in 1999, was founded in 1959 by revered CMS Founder, late Dr Jagdish Gandhi, and his wife, CMS Founder-Director, Dr Bharti Gandhi, with just five students and a borrowed capital of INR 300 in a rented building. Its Guinness World Record status highlights both size and substance. The achievement stems from decades of work, winning parents’ trust.
Today it operates 22 campuses in Lucknow, serving children from pre-primary to senior secondary levels, and offers Council for the Indian School Certificate Examinations (CISCE), Cambridge Assessment International Education (CAIE) and CBSE curricula at select campuses. The school remains committed to providing an education that develops academic ability alongside character, values and a sense of global citizenship, as reflected in the school motto of ‘Jai Jagat’.
Although recognised as the world’s largest school, CMS places importance on individual learning. Students are supported through experienced teachers, structured mentoring and opportunities that encourage intellectual curiosity, critical thinking, creativity, collaboration and leadership. The school’s objective is not simply to produce high academic achievers but to nurture responsible, confident, innovative, problem-solving and compassionate young people. By 2026, the school’s total enrolment stood at over 65,000.
CMS first entered the Guinness World Records in 1999 with 22,612 students. Further recognitions came in 2010 and 2019. The 2023 figure of 61,345 confirmed its position for the 24th consecutive year. Such sustained scale requires planning, parent support, and staff commitment.
