First Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt
Honourable Justice Dr Dr (h.c.) Adel Omar Sherif serves as the First Deputy Chief Justice of the Supreme Constitutional Court of Egypt. With a judicial career spanning more than 20 years, he has been instrumental in shaping Egypt’s constitutional jurisprudence.
Beyond his judicial roles, Justice Sherif has served as a legal adviser to numerous governmental bodies, including the Prime Minister’s Office. Internationally, he has served as Vice-President of the International Judicial Academy in Washington, D.C., and sits on the boards of several academic and legal institutions worldwide.
Justice Sherif is globally recognised for his contributions to human rights, judicial integrity, and environmental law. He has advised the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP), served on the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights’ Judicial Reference Group, and held leadership roles with the International Judicial Academy and the Centre for Islamic and Middle Eastern Law. He is also a member of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) and the International Network for Environmental Compliance and Enforcement (INECE).
A prolific scholar, he has authored numerous works on constitutional law, human rights, and Islamic jurisprudence, exploring the intersections of democracy, religion, and the rule of law. For his outstanding contributions to justice and interfaith understanding, he has been honoured internationally, including with the Key to the City of Lucknow (India, 2014), the Constitution Medal of Kazakhstan (2020), an honorary doctorate from Ateneo de Davao University, and the Hope of Humanity Award (2020).
