Honourable Mr Justice Jorge Benavides Ordóñez is an Ecuadorian constitutional lawyer and academic appointed to the Constitutional Court in March 2025 through a merit-based selection process. He holds a Doctorate in Constitutional Law from the University of Sevilla, Spain, along with master’s degrees in Constitutional Law and Philosophy & Modern Culture from the same institution. His distinguished government service includes roles as Vice-Minister of Public Service, Sub-Secretary General Legal of the Presidency, and President of the Board of EMCO-EP. In academia, he has taught constitutional law at universities including UTE and Andina Simón Bolívar, and served as Dean of the School of Government at the Instituto de Altos Estudios Nacionales. His scholarly contributions include publications on constitutional reform, constitutional justice, and democracy, notably on same-sex marriage cases in Ecuador. His appointment represents the convergence of academic excellence, practical government experience, and constitutional expertise.
