Mangroves: Nature’s Natural Barrier Against Climate Change

Protecting Them is Protecting Our Future

On August 7th, 2024, the Environmental Club of CMS Aliganj Campus I hosted an insightful workshop on the conservation of mangroves. Organized by the Green Ambassadors of the Junior Section and guided by Junior Section Incharge Ms. Archana Agarwal and Environment Coordinator Mr Kailash Keswani, the workshop aimed to raise awareness about mangroves’ critical role in climate change mitigation and ecosystem stability.

Creating a Difference

The workshop featured a powerful presentation by Ms Gaurika Gautam, a Grade 10 DPS Sharjah student. She has emerged as a passionate environmentalist dedicated to mangrove conservation. Accompanied by her sister, Ms Vedika Gautam, and mother, Ms Shilpi Gautam, Gaurika shared her expertise on mangroves and their vital role in preserving our planet’s health.

The session began with an introduction to mangroves—unique coastal ecosystems that grow in tropical and subtropical regions. The students were shown maps illustrating where mangroves are found both in India and across the globe.

Theme

Ms. Gautam highlighted the alarming issues facing mangroves today. Despite their significance, mangrove forests are rapidly disappearing due to human activities like deforestation, urbanization, and land reclamation for development purpose. The loss of mangroves not only impacts biodiversity but also leaves coastal areas vulnerable to flooding, soil erosion, and extreme weather events.

Objective

A core focus of the workshop was to discuss how mangroves act as natural barriers against climate change. These resilient plants absorb carbon dioxide, one of the leading greenhouse gases responsible for global warming, acting as one of the most efficient carbon sinks in the world.

Additionally, the root systems of mangroves provide critical protection to coastlines, reducing the impact of storms and floods. The workshop’s primary agenda was to educate students about the importance of mangroves and inspire them to take action.

Key Highlight

Ms Gautam spoke about the various initiatives that have been launched to protect and restore mangrove forests, such as India’s Mishti Scheme (Mangrove Initiative for Shoreline Habitats and Tangible Incomes) and India’s involvement in the Mangrove Alliance for Climate—a global initiative aimed at preserving and expanding mangrove ecosystems to tackle climate change.

Active Participation by Green Ambassadors

The workshop wasn’t just about theory—it incorporated a series of fun and educational activities to reinforce the key concepts shared. The students participated in a “Guess the Word” game and an Unscramble challenge, both designed to enhance their understanding of mangroves.

One of the most impactful activities was the “Make Own Mangrove Chart,” where each group of students was encouraged to draw a mangrove tree and write about its importance on each of the tree’s leaves. Each group then presented their charts, which led to a fruitful open discussion about mangrove conservation strategies.

Token of Thanks

The workshop concluded with a memorable gesture when Senior Principal Ms. Jyoti Kashyap presented Ms. Gaurika Gautam with a sapling as a token of appreciation. This symbolic act represented the first step toward change and a greener future.

Parting ways, but staying connected

Before bidding farewell, the Eco-Warriors of the Junior Section had a meaningful conversation with Principal Ms. Shivani Singh Ma’am. They discussed their future goals for mangrove conservation and environmental advocacy.

The workshop had a lasting impact on the students, who left with a deeper commitment to environmental stewardship. They are now more determined than ever to carry forward the message of mangrove conservation.

The Green Ambassadors, inspired by Gaurika’s efforts, are confident that they will continue to champion the cause of mangrove conservation, thus helping to safeguard these ecosystems for generations to come.
