At City Montessori School, Rajajipuram Campus II, we prioritize a holistic approach to education that sparks curiosity, creativity, and confidence in our young learners. To strengthen the vital school-parent partnership, the campus recently hosted an ALfA Orientation Program for the parents of Pre-Primary, Grade I, and Grade II students. This event introduced the ALFA methodology (Active Learning for All)—a dynamic, student-centered approach to education that fosters experiential learning and interactive teaching techniques.
The Orientation Program was designed to give parents an in-depth understanding of how we engage students through hands-on learning, nurturing creativity and problem-solving skills.
Key Highlights of the Orientation Program
Opening Prayer & Commencement of Activities
The session began with a thoughtful opening prayer, setting a reflective and positive tone for the day. This heartfelt gesture established the foundation for a day full of learning, collaboration, and engagement.
Understanding ALFA: A New-Age Learning Approach
The core of the program focused on introducing the ALFA methodology. ALFA is built around three key principles:
- Learning by Doing – Encouraging children to explore through hands-on experiences that deepen understanding.
- Child-Led Exploration – Promoting curiosity and self-discovery as students take charge of their learning journey.
- Interactive and Joyful Learning – Utilizing play-based techniques to build literacy, numeracy, and essential life skills in a fun and engaging way.
A highlight of the session was the introduction of Tina & Toto, two lovable puppets designed to immerse young learners in spoken English while fostering language development.
Our Headmistress extended a warm welcome to all parents, emphasizing our school’s commitment to experiential learning and holistic development. She shared valuable insights into:
- How ALFA integrates storytelling, role play, and real-world applications to build foundational literacy and numeracy skills.
- The role of teachers as Galvanizers, energizing students and guiding them through interactive and engaging learning experiences.
Interactive Hands-On Activities: Learning in Action
One of the most exciting elements of the orientation was the opportunity for parents to actively engage in the learning process through practical demonstrations of the ALFA methodology. These interactive activities allowed parents to experience firsthand how our students learn in the classroom:
-
Literacy Activity: Teachers demonstrated picture card-based storytelling, showing how this technique helps students build language and comprehension skills. Parents actively participated, learning how visual and sensory engagement deepens students’ understanding of words and concepts.
-
Numeracy Activity: The Numeracy Kit was introduced, showcasing how interactive tools make mathematical concepts more accessible and engaging. Parents observed the Clap & Snap method, which helps children learn about place value (Ones, Tens & Hundreds) in a rhythmic, enjoyable manner.
These activities highlighted how play-based learning fosters retention, comprehension, and problem-solving skills in young learners.
Parent Feedback & Q&A Session for ALFA Orientation
The program concluded with a feedback and Q&A session where parents had the opportunity to:
- Share their thoughts and feedback on the ALFA methodology.
- Ask questions regarding its implementation and the benefits it brings to their child’s education.
- Offer suggestions to help further enhance the overall learning experience for students.
Strengthening the School-Parent Partnership
The Orientation Program was a great success, strengthening the collaborative partnership between the school and parents. By actively participating in hands-on activities, parents gained a deeper understanding of their child’s educational journey and the innovative methods used at CMS to make learning engaging and effective.
The ALFA methodology received positive feedback, with parents praising the interactive tools, play-based learning techniques, and the emphasis on student-centric education. This event reinforced CMS’s commitment to fostering an environment where students are motivated, curious, and confident learners.
